How to cut Back on Sugar
Here are 7 ways you can cut back on sugar
1. Be careful of the ‘healthy sugar’ claims, fat free products and the ‘all natural’ options …. So you know those all natural lollies? (damn they taste good don’t they?) Just because they are a little bit better than the others doesn’t mean they are good for you. I hate the be the bearer of bad news, but if you check the label you’ll still find they are actually high in sugar.
2. Read the labels. I make sure that the girls I train do their best to avoid products with more than 5g of sugar per 100gs
3. Eliminate. I know I know, eliminating food doesn’t sound like much fun but I’m going to ask you for 30 days to eliminate processed carbohydrates. I’m talking breads, bagels, most pastas and most ‘convenient snacks’
4. Don’t add it. People still add sugar to cereal, tea and coffee. Its one of the easiest ways to eliminate it from your diet.
5. Don’t go crazy on fruit. Now before you get a little upset about fruit hear me out. Yes, fruit is healthy but it is also high in sugar. For those clients that are looking to lose weight I recommend ONE serve a day and for those looking to maintain their weight or are training for an endurance event or play professional sport, a maximum of TWO pieces is fine. Be careful of the LARGE fruit salad — it has a lot more than 2 serves in it. And when you’re choosing the fruits try to do the low G.I. fruits like berries and cherries
6. Get colourful. Think about your normal supermarket for a second. All the colourful food (which is different to colourful packaging) is around the outside and all the brown and white stuff is down the aisles. Try and get as much colour into your basket as you can.
7. Watch those liquid calories. It is by far the easiest way to cut back on your sugar. Cut back or eliminate your liquid calories. That glass of fruit juice you’re having in the morning, I know I use to think it was healthy too! The word ‘fruit’ glorifies what is essentially a sugar drink. Try weaning yourself off it and increase your water and herbal tea intake.
Here is the thing. It wont be easy, sugar is SUPER addictive but all I ask is that you wean yourself off it or ideally cut it out completely for 30 days — it’ll be worth it.
